Ben Stokes shines in red-ball comeback with two fifties and seven wickets following his international retirement.

In a remarkable return to red-ball cricket, Ben Stokes showcased his exceptional skills for Durham, leading the team to a commanding 338-run victory over Derbyshire in the County Championship. This match marked Stokes' first appearance in the format since his retirement from international cricket in June, and he made a significant impact both with the bat and the ball.

Stokes Shines with Bat and Ball

After Durham set a first-innings total of 283, Stokes contributed a solid 53 runs. His performance with the bat was complemented by a strong bowling display, where he took two wickets as Derbyshire was dismissed for just 156 runs. Matthew Potts also excelled, claiming five wickets in that innings, further solidifying Durham's position.

In the second innings, Stokes elevated his performance, finishing not out on 66. His innings, alongside Ben McKinney's impressive 140 and Will Rhodes' 52, helped Durham establish a daunting target of 423 runs for Derbyshire to chase.

Dominant Bowling Performance Seals the Win

Stokes reserved his best bowling for the final innings, where he delivered a stunning spell, taking 5 wickets for just 17 runs. This performance was pivotal in Derbyshire's collapse to a mere 84 runs, culminating in a seven-wicket match haul for Stokes. His spell was particularly devastating, as he claimed three wickets in just four deliveries. He began by dismissing Brooke Guest for 11 runs, followed by trapping Anuj Dal lbw with the next ball. After Ben Aitchison survived the third delivery, he edged the fourth to slip, sealing Derbyshire's fate.

This emphatic victory not only showcased Stokes' return to form but also propelled Durham to the top of the County Championship standings, with six wins out of nine matches. The team is set to face Gloucestershire at Chester-le-Street starting August 27, marking another opportunity for Stokes to continue his impressive comeback to regular red-ball cricket.
