Bangladesh's defeat to Australia enhances India's chances for the WTC final.

NEW DELHI: The recent Test match between Bangladesh and Australia has shifted the dynamics of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, providing a glimmer of hope for India. After Bangladesh's historic victory in the first Test in Darwin, where they secured their inaugural Test win on Australian soil, the second Test in Mackay saw a dramatic turnaround. Australia, led by Mitchell Starc's remarkable 10-wicket performance, triumphed by an innings and 51 runs, leveling the series at 1-1 and significantly impacting Bangladesh's standing in the WTC.

Bangladesh's Setback and India's Opportunity

Despite their loss, Bangladesh remains in fourth place in the WTC rankings, but their points percentage has taken a hit, plummeting from 66.67 to 55.56. Currently, they have accumulated 50 points from six matches, which includes three victories, two losses, and one draw. India, positioned just behind with 64 points and a points percentage of 53.33 from ten matches, is poised to overtake Bangladesh. A win against Sri Lanka in their upcoming second Test in Colombo would allow India to reclaim the fourth spot.

Australia's victory not only solidified their lead at the top of the table with 96 points and an 80% points percentage but also highlighted the competitive nature of the standings. South Africa and New Zealand follow closely, holding second and third places with points percentages of 75 and 72.22, respectively. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, India's next opponent, sits sixth with a points percentage of 33.33, while England, West Indies, and Pakistan round out the bottom of the table.

Bangladesh's Historic Ranking Despite Loss

In a silver lining for Bangladesh, their Test campaign has led to a historic achievement. Despite the defeat in Mackay, they have ascended to sixth place in the ICC Test rankings, marking their highest position ever. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed pride in this accomplishment, acknowledging the significance of reaching sixth place while also reflecting on the need for improvement in their performance. "It would have been better if we could have played better cricket in this Test match," he stated.

Shanto emphasized the importance of gaining experience in Australian conditions, advocating for more frequent tours to Australia. "It's hard for the players. Probably 90% of the players haven't played here. They don't know how to adjust," he noted, urging for consistent exposure to such challenging environments to enhance their competitiveness in international cricket.
