NEW DELHI: The much-anticipated debut of
Sooryavanshi started his innings with promise, hitting two consecutive boundaries. However, his aggressive approach was cut short when he edged a delivery from North East pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam to Joseph Lalthankhuma at gully. This unfortunate dismissal occurred on the last ball of Konthoujam's first over, leaving the 15-year-old to depart the field after facing just six deliveries.
High Expectations and Modest Statistics
Having been named vice-captain of the East Zone team, with Ishan Kishan at the helm, Sooryavanshi entered the quarterfinal match under the spotlight, especially following his impressive performances in T20 cricket. Despite the buzz surrounding him, his first-class statistics tell a different story. In eight first-class matches for Bihar, he has batted in 12 innings, averaging just over 17 runs, with a top score of 93.
The Duleep Trophy presented a crucial opportunity for Sooryavanshi to gain experience in red-ball cricket, particularly against a North East Zone team that features a relatively inexperienced bowling attack. His inclusion in the squad, along with his role as vice-captain, made him a focal point of discussion leading up to the match.
East Zone's Experienced Lineup
East Zone's roster is bolstered by several seasoned players, including captain Ishan Kishan, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, and other notable names like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Kumar Kushagra, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Mukesh Kumar. This blend of experience and youth aims to propel East Zone deep into the tournament.
If East Zone advances, they are set to face either Central Zone or South Zone in the semifinal, scheduled to take place at the same venue starting August 30. The team will be looking to build on their strengths and support their young vice-captain in future matches.
