In a significant development ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, India made a notable change to their lineup.
India entered this match with a commanding 1-0 lead in the series, following a decisive 165-run victory in the first Test held in Galle. Kuldeep's absence necessitated a shift in India's strategy, as Jain stepped in to fulfill the role of a spin-bowling allrounder. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that while Kuldeep was unavailable for selection, he could still participate as a concussion substitute if the situation arose. "Mr. Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was unavailable for selection in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka," the BCCI stated.
Captain's Insights on Team Changes
After the toss, Gill addressed the media regarding Kuldeep's situation, explaining that the infection had sidelined the left-arm wrist spinner. "Kuldeep, unfortunately, had some infections, so he misses out, and Saransh makes his debut for India," Gill remarked. Jain, who is 33 years old, received his India cap from Ravindra Jadeja during a team huddle, marking a significant milestone as he became the first Indian player to debut internationally after turning 33 since Robin Singh in 1998.
In his decision to bat first, Gill expressed confidence in the Colombo pitch, suggesting it provided superior batting conditions compared to the previous match in Galle. "Batting first, yes. It looks like a much harder, much better surface compared to Galle," he noted. Reflecting on India's performance in the first Test, Gill rated the team's effort highly but acknowledged areas for improvement. "I would say probably a nine, because there's always room for improvement," he stated, emphasizing the challenges of maintaining consistent performance over the five days of Test cricket.
