The board is actively monitoring the teenager’s progress to manage the intense expectations that accompany such an early entry into professional cricket.
A Focus on Longevity and Mentorship
Addressing the media, Devajit Saikia emphasised that the BCCI’s objective is to mirror the career trajectory of legends like Sachin Tendulkar. The board is taking a cautious, methodical approach to Sooryavanshi’s career, ensuring he receives the necessary guidance to navigate the pressures of international competition. Saikia noted that the board is monitoring every step of his development to prevent him from becoming a one-series or one-year wonder.
This commitment to his future is supported by the direct involvement of VVS Laxman at the Centre of Excellence. Laxman is overseeing the training and skill development of Sooryavanshi as part of a broader initiative to manage the transition of young players from age-group cricket to the senior international stage.
Record-Breaking Rise to International Cricket
Sooryavanshi’s emergence has been marked by a series of exceptional performances. His breakthrough came during the 2026 IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs across 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30. His campaign included a century and five half-centuries, alongside a record-setting 72 sixes. These efforts earned him the Orange Cap, as well as the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker, and Super Sixes awards.
The teenager’s momentum continued on the international stage against Zimbabwe, where he scored 151 runs in three matches, helping India secure a 3-0 series sweep and earning the Player of the Series accolade. Domestically, he recently set a new benchmark by becoming the youngest batter to score a half-century in the history of the Duleep Trophy at 15 years and 157 days old, eclipsing a record that had stood for 57 years.
The BCCI has confirmed that Sooryavanshi is part of a wider targeted group of 10 to 15 emerging players currently under close observation. By integrating these talents into the central development structure, the board aims to maintain a pipeline of high-performing athletes across both men’s and women’s cricket.
