He maintained that the BCCI is prepared to intervene independently to guarantee that players and support staff receive high-quality facilities, regardless of the arrangements provided by the event organizers.
Commitment to Player Welfare and Logistics
The logistical landscape for the Aichi-Nagoya Games has been a subject of discussion, with organizers confirming that over 17,000 participants will be accommodated across a mix of hotels, temporary housing, and a cruise ship, rather than a centralized athletes' village. In response to these unique conditions, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) has stated that participating cricket teams have been offered hotel accommodation, with the flexibility to make alternative arrangements if preferred.
Saikia’s comments serve as a clear directive that the BCCI will prioritize the comfort and performance environment of its squads. “If any kind of situation arises, we will take an appropriate call at the right time so that we ensure that our players and the support staff will get the best facilities in the Asian Games,” Saikia told reporters. He added that if the standard of local arrangements proves insufficient, the board will implement its own systems to support the teams.
Squad Leadership and Tournament Outlook
India heads into the tournament as the defending gold medalists in both the men’s and women’s T20 cricket categories. The men’s squad, captained by Shreyas Iyer, will be under the guidance of VVS Laxman, the director of cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. Laxman, who previously oversaw the men’s gold medal victory at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, will be supported by coaches Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, and Subhadeep Ghosh. Meanwhile, the women’s team will be led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and coached by Amol Muzumdar, with assistance from Aavishkar Salvi and Munish Bali.
The men’s campaign is scheduled to commence on September 24, while the women’s side is set to enter the competition at the quarterfinal stage against Japan. With both squads featuring a blend of experienced international players and emerging talent, the BCCI’s focus remains on mitigating any potential distractions to ensure the teams are fully prepared to defend their titles.
