Abhishek Sharma earns Chris Gayle comparison after reaching 2,000 T20I run milestone

Abhishek Sharma has cemented his status as one of India's most destructive T20 talents, delivering a match-winning performance in the third T20I against the West Indies. The left-hander’s explosive 69 off just 30 deliveries propelled India to a 14-run victory at the Holkar Stadium, handing the hosts a crucial 2-1 lead in the ongoing five-match series.

The innings was a masterclass in aggressive batting, featuring six boundaries and five towering sixes. Abhishek reached his half-century in a mere 18 balls, marking his 14th T20I fifty and providing the momentum necessary for India to post a formidable total of 223. Despite a late-innings slowdown, the target proved too steep for the West Indies, who finished on 209/7.

A milestone performance and high praise

Beyond the immediate result, the match served as a landmark occasion for the young opener. Abhishek became the sixth Indian man to surpass 2,000 T20I runs, achieving the feat faster than any other batter in terms of balls faced. His career tally now stands at 2,036 runs across 65 matches, maintained at a staggering strike rate of 195.95.

The display drew significant acclaim from former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who drew a bold parallel between the youngster and West Indies legend Chris Gayle. Speaking on JioStar, Pujara highlighted the maturity Abhishek has begun to display alongside his natural power. He noted that while Abhishek is known for his rapid starts, his ability to assess conditions—such as his recent approach in Indore—demonstrates a growing understanding of his game.

Pujara remarked that when discussions turn to the T20 format, Chris Gayle is the immediate point of reference for explosive power, and he believes Abhishek possesses that same rare capability. He added that the young batter has firmly established himself as a premier T20 player for India, one whose contributions are set to be remembered for years to come.

Record-breaking form in 2026

Abhishek’s 2026 campaign has been nothing short of prolific. He has accumulated 921 runs in 32 matches this year, including a century and eight half-centuries. His strike rate of 206.50 and his record for the fastest T20I century by a player from a Test-playing nation underscore his dominance. Furthermore, he has equaled Suryakumar Yadav’s record for the most sixes in a calendar year with 68, though he has achieved this at a significantly higher frequency, clearing the ropes once every 6.55 balls.

His ability to dismantle bowling attacks early is unparalleled; this latest effort marked the seventh time he has reached a fifty within the first six overs of an innings—a feat no other player has managed more than twice. With the series finely poised, India will look to Abhishek to maintain this form when the fourth T20I takes place on Wednesday, where a win would clinch the series for the hosts.
