AB de Villiers has lauded the recent form of Virat Kohli, noting a distinct shift in the Indian batter's approach to the ODI format. The former South African captain, who shared a dressing room with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, highlighted the aggressive mindset that has defined the star player's recent performances.

Kohli’s evolution was on full display during the opening ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. In a commanding display, he struck an unbeaten 139 from just 88 deliveries, featuring 10 fours and nine sixes. His knock was instrumental in guiding India to a comfortable victory while chasing a target of 296, securing the win with eight wickets to spare.

A Third Peak for Kohli

Reflecting on Kohli's current trajectory, de Villiers identified this phase as a significant milestone in the veteran's career. He categorized the current run as a third peak, drawing comparisons to Kohli’s previous dominant stretches between 2012 and 2014, and again from 2016 to 2019. According to de Villiers, this latest iteration of Kohli’s game is defined by a newfound positivity and a willingness to take the attack to the opposition.

De Villiers noted that Kohli’s ability to leverage his vast experience while maintaining an aggressive stance has allowed him to reach a new level. He emphasized that by focusing on getting into strong positions and playing with intent, Kohli is consistently bringing out his best performances. This shift in philosophy is particularly relevant as the cricketing world begins to turn its attention toward the 2027 World Cup.

World Cup Hopes and Proteas Outlook

Beyond his assessment of Kohli, de Villiers shared his thoughts on the upcoming return of the ODI World Cup to South Africa. Having experienced the tournament on home soil in 2003, he expressed optimism about the current state of the South African national team. Despite the disappointment of the 2003 campaign, de Villiers believes the current Proteas squad possesses the chemistry and individual talent necessary to compete at the highest level.

He pointed to South Africa's recent success against Australia—a sixth consecutive ODI series victory over the world champions—as a clear indicator of the team's potential. De Villiers expressed confidence that the current group has built a strong culture, which he believes will be vital when the tournament begins and the inevitable media and public pressure intensifies.
