Justin Jefferson Ruled Out for Vikings Against Dolphins with Ankle Injury

The Minnesota Vikings will be without star wide receiver Justin Jefferson for their upcoming clash against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday. Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed on Friday that the playmaker has been ruled out of the contest as he continues to recover from a sprained left ankle.

Jefferson sustained the injury during the first quarter of Minnesota's Week 3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The receiver did not participate in any team practices throughout the week, leading to the decision to keep him sidelined as he undergoes treatment. Despite the setback, O'Connell expressed optimism regarding a potential return for the Vikings' Week 5 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Managing the Recovery and Looking Ahead

O'Connell noted that Jefferson is showing signs of improvement, stating that the player is feeling better as he works through his rehabilitation. The coaching staff is targeting a return to the practice field next week, which holds extra significance for the receiver, who was born in St. Rose, Louisiana, and played his collegiate football at LSU.

The absence of Jefferson snaps a significant streak of availability. Prior to this injury, he had appeared in 39 consecutive games, a run that followed a seven-game absence in 2023 caused by a torn right hamstring. Before that 2023 injury, he had maintained a streak of 55 straight appearances.

Adjusting the Vikings Receiving Corps

With Jefferson unavailable, Jordan Addison is expected to step into the role of the primary target for the Vikings' passing attack. Addison demonstrated his capability in the previous outing, recording five receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown following Jefferson's early exit against Tampa Bay. The team's three-receiver sets are set to feature Addison alongside Jauan Jennings, with either Myles Price or Tai Felton expected to round out the unit.

The Vikings have faced challenges in building chemistry between their key offensive players this season. While the team entered 2026 with high expectations following the acquisition of quarterback Kyler Murray, the pair has been limited to just 18 snaps together. These disruptions have been caused by Murray’s Week 1 concussion and the current ankle injury limiting Jefferson. Jefferson, who led the NFL in receiving yards per game from 2020 to 2024, has recorded 13 catches for 179 yards and two touchdowns across three appearances this season.
