Neeraj Chopra Shifts Focus from CWG Silver as He Prepares to Compete Against Arshad Nadeem and Rumesh Pathirage Once More

Following his silver medal achievement at the Commonwealth Games 2026, Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is setting his sights on the Lausanne Diamond League, scheduled for August 21. The two-time Olympic medallist is preparing to face a highly competitive field, which promises to be more challenging than the recent Glasgow Games. Among the competitors is Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage, who recently claimed the Commonwealth title with an impressive throw of 89.75 meters, surpassing Neeraj to secure gold.

The Lausanne event will feature a host of elite athletes, including Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan, reigning World champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, and former World and Olympic champion Anderson Peters. Additionally, Tokyo silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch, Germany's Julian Weber, and World Championship contender Curtis Thompson will also be in attendance. With five of these athletes having recently competed against each other in the Commonwealth Games final, the upcoming competition is expected to deliver another thrilling showdown.

In the Commonwealth Games men's javelin throw final, Neeraj began with a throw of 80.97 meters and improved to 85.83 meters in his second attempt, which ultimately became his best throw of the event. His other valid attempts measured 81.29 meters and 80.73 meters, while his final two throws were fouls. Despite not clinching gold, Neeraj expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, "I am very happy. I am always happy whenever the national anthem is played. But it's ok [to win silver] as I did my personal best and my comeback is getting better."

The Lausanne Diamond League serves as an ideal platform for Neeraj and his competitors, including Pathirage and Nadeem, to gauge their readiness ahead of the Asian Games 2026, which commence in September. The trio, along with other top-tier athletes, are anticipated to face off multiple times in the months leading up to the Games, adding to the excitement of the upcoming athletic season.
