Jharkhand's Shilpa Kumari, motivated by Neeraj Chopra, aspires to achieve Olympic success.

Neeraj Chopra's historic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics not only marked a significant achievement for Indian athletics but also ignited a wave of interest in javelin throw across the nation. Among the emerging talents is Shilpa Kumari, a promising athlete from a small village in Gumla, Jharkhand, who is now being hailed as a potential star in women's javelin. As the current national record holder in the women's U-17 category, Shilpa's journey reflects the growing enthusiasm for the sport in India.

Shilpa's passion for javelin was sparked by watching Chopra's Olympic victory on television alongside her neighbors. The celebration in her village left a lasting impression on her. "Seeing Neeraj Chopra win gold inspired me to take up javelin. I aspire to follow in his footsteps and win an Olympic medal," she shared in a recent interview with SAI Media. This moment became a turning point in her life, solidifying her ambition to achieve Olympic success.

Her journey took a significant step forward during an athletics trial at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Ranchi, where her talent was first recognized. Coach Binod Singh recalls the day he discovered Shilpa, describing her as "the brightest emerging women's javelin star in India." He noted her natural throwing ability, which stood out even though she was a novice at the time. "I could see her potential and knew she was a promising prospect for the future," Singh remarked.

Under Singh's guidance, Shilpa's skills flourished, leading to her remarkable performance at the 69th National School Games in 2025, where she set a new women's U-17 record with a throw of 55.62 meters. This achievement surpassed the existing U-18 national record of 55.19 meters, held by Deepika from Haryana. However, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) did not officially recognize this mark due to the competition's lack of sanctioning by World Athletics.

Despite this setback, Shilpa remains undeterred. Her official personal best of 45.90 meters was recorded at the 2025 Junior Nationals, showcasing her significant improvement. "My focus is solely on performing my best. If my previous throw isn't recognized, I aim to surpass it in my next competition," she stated confidently.

Looking ahead, Shilpa is setting her sights on the Summer Youth Olympics, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal. "My immediate goal is to stand on the podium at the Youth Olympics, but ultimately, I dream of winning an Olympic medal," she expressed. Shilpa concluded with a heartfelt dedication, stating, "I will dedicate my Olympic medal to Neeraj sir." Her determination and talent signal a bright future for women's javelin in India.
