Sreeshankar secured a silver medal in the long jump event on Monday, recording a best effort of 8.07m during his second attempt. However, the competition ended prematurely for the athlete when he suffered an ankle injury during his fourth jump, forcing him to withdraw from his final two attempts. Despite the setback, he managed to maintain his position on the podium, repeating his silver-medal success from the previous edition of the Games.

Addressing the situation, S Murali stated that the athlete would require a period of rest and rehabilitation to return to full fitness. With the competitive season now concluded, there is no immediate pressure for Sreeshankar to return to the track, allowing him sufficient time to recover properly. The coach noted that while the injury is manageable, it will unfortunately cut short the athlete's planned post-season break following a demanding year of travel and competition.
The team is currently evaluating the best location for the rehabilitation process. One potential venue being considered is Doha, where Sreeshankar previously underwent successful knee surgery in 2024. The presence of family in the region makes it a viable option, though a final decision on the recovery plan has yet to be confirmed.
The update follows a distressing moment immediately after Monday's competition, where the athlete had described the injury as severe in a video shared by the Athletics Federation of India. At the time, Sreeshankar noted that he was struggling to stand due to the pain. However, the latest assessment provides a much more optimistic outlook for his career as he prepares for the upcoming season.
In the final standings of the event, China’s Shi Yuhao claimed the gold medal with a jump of 8.17m, while Anvar Anvarov of Uzbekistan took home the bronze with a mark of 8.06m.
