India Secures Mixed 4x400m Relay Silver and Historic 10,000m Bronze at Asian Games

India enjoyed a productive day on the track at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Thursday, securing a silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay and a significant bronze in the women's 10,000m final. The relay quartet of Poovamma Raju, Vishal Thennarasu, Vithya Ramraj, and Manu TS clocked 3:14.46 to clinch the silver, successfully defending the medal India earned at the 2023 Hangzhou Games. A powerful final leg from Vithya Ramraj proved instrumental in securing the podium finish, though Bahrain ultimately took the gold with a new Games record time of 3:12.87.

In the women's 10,000m, Seema Kumari delivered a landmark performance for the nation, crossing the finish line in 32:50.05. Her bronze medal marks the first time an Indian athlete has reached the podium in this event in 16 years, representing only the third time India has secured a medal in the discipline at the Asian Games.

Heartbreak for Asha Ilango in Triple Jump

While the track events brought success, the field saw a narrow miss for India in the women's triple jump. Asha Ilango finished in fourth place after a tense countback against China’s Li Yi. Both athletes recorded a best effort of 13.83m, but because Li held a superior second-best jump, the bronze medal was awarded to the Chinese competitor. Asha, who produced her best mark in the third round, needed to improve on her 13.79m secondary mark with her final attempt but could only manage 13.59m.

Asha’s campaign began with a 13.43m jump followed by a foul, before she found her rhythm in the third round to enter medal contention. Despite her efforts, she was unable to surpass the 13.83m mark in her final three attempts. The event was won by Uzbekistan’s Sharifa Davronova, who defended her title with a personal-best leap of 14.35m, while China’s Huang Yingying took silver with 14.12m.

The second Indian representative in the triple jump, Niharika Vashisht, concluded her competition after the first three rounds. After fouling her opening attempt, she recorded jumps of 13.00m and 12.60m, placing her 10th overall and outside the cut-off for the final three rounds of jumps. Niharika, who entered the event with a season's best of 13.64m, was unable to match her previous form on the day.
