Nishu Secures 53kg Trial Victory, Sets Up Decider Against Antim Panghal

Nishu has emerged as the winner in the 53kg category at the national selection trials for the upcoming Senior World Wrestling Championships. Her victory at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, secured after a hard-fought win over Thishka, sets the stage for a high-stakes final showdown against Antim Panghal.

The upcoming bout between Nishu and Panghal will ultimately decide which athlete represents India in the 53kg division at the Senior World Championships, scheduled to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1. This selection process follows the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) policy, which grants trial winners the opportunity to challenge those already selected for the Asian Games for a spot at the world event.

In the 57kg category, Simran demonstrated composure to overcome Swati Shinde, while Neelam secured a victory over Ankush to finish first in the 50kg division. The remaining weight classes saw Tapsya emerge triumphant in the 62kg category after a win against Anjali, and Srishti claim the 68kg title by defeating Bipasha.

Reflecting on the day's proceedings, WFI President Sanjay Singh expressed satisfaction with the level of competition displayed by the athletes. He noted that the intensity and determination shown by the wrestlers throughout the bouts were encouraging, highlighting the significant depth present across the various weight categories. Singh extended his congratulations to the winners, noting that the federation looks forward to seeing these athletes represent India on the international stage.

While the winners of Monday's trials have secured their positions in the next phase, the WFI confirmed that the final trials for these berths will be held at a later date. Additionally, the federation noted that trials for four non-Olympic weight classes are also scheduled to take place in the future.
