Paes seeks to become a member of AITA's SOM roster.

Paes seeks to be included in AITA's squad for the upcoming SOM event.

Leander Paes, the renowned Indian tennis player and current president of the Bengal Tennis Association (BTA), has submitted his application to be included in the All-India Tennis Association's (AITA) list of Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM). The announcement was made by the BTA via social media on Friday.

New SOM Roster and Its Implications

The AITA is in the process of establishing a roster that will consist of 20 male and 20 female athletes recognized for their exceptional contributions to sports. From this group, two men and two women will be elected to the AITA General Body, granting them voting rights. Additionally, one male and one female SOM will be included in the 15-member Executive Committee. Those elected to the General Body will have the opportunity to apply for positions within the Executive Committee and can also run for key roles such as AITA president, general secretary, and treasurer.

The AITA began accepting applications for the SOM roster on August 15. However, on August 19, the organization reached out to the Union Sports Ministry to propose an expansion of the selection criteria. While the National Sports Governance Act emphasizes achievements in the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, the AITA has requested that accomplishments in Grand Slam events, ATP and WTA tournaments, as well as the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup, be considered as well. These tournaments are particularly significant in the realm of tennis.

Paes's Historic Achievements

Leander Paes's application is bolstered by his remarkable career, particularly his historic bronze medal win in singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. This achievement marked a pivotal moment for Indian sports, as it was the country's first individual Olympic medal since K.D. Jadhav's in 1952. As a result, Paes qualifies as a Tier 1 SOM, reflecting his substantial impact on Indian tennis and his legacy as one of the sport's greats.
