Carlos Alcaraz reaches Japan Open semifinals as Denis Shapovalov retires

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz has secured his place in the semifinals of the Japan Open after his quarterfinal opponent, Denis Shapovalov, was forced to withdraw from the contest due to a hip injury. The match, which had reached the 82-minute mark, ended with Alcaraz leading 7-6 (4), 2-1.

The encounter was shaping up to be a competitive battle before the premature conclusion. Alcaraz, who is currently navigating his return to the tour following a four-month absence due to a wrist injury, demonstrated his composure under pressure during a demanding opening set. Shapovalov had pushed the Spaniard to the brink, creating a set point opportunity at 5-4, but Alcaraz neutralized the threat with a precise drop shot before clinching the set in a tiebreak.

Physical setback ends Shapovalov's campaign

The momentum shifted early in the second set as the physical intensity of the baseline rallies began to take its toll on the Canadian. While attempting to reach for a running forehand, Shapovalov appeared to sustain a hip injury. Although he sought treatment during an off-court medical timeout following the first game of the second set, it became clear upon his return that he was unable to move freely enough to compete at the required level.

The retirement marks a disappointing end to the tournament for Shapovalov, while Alcaraz continues his momentum following his recent appearance at the Laver Cup, where he contributed to Team Europe’s success with a singles victory over Taylor Fritz. The Spaniard is now set to face fellow countryman Jaume Munar in the next round. Munar earned his spot in the final four after a straight-sets victory over French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet, winning 6-4, 6-2 earlier in the day.
