Fils showcased an impressive performance right from the start, dominating the first set by losing only three points on his serve. He quickly established a commanding lead, breaking Tiafoe early to go up 3-0. The Frenchman maintained his momentum, wrapping up the opening set in just 29 minutes with his eighth ace. Despite Tiafoe's efforts to find his rhythm, he struggled to apply consistent pressure on Fils's serve throughout the match.
After securing the title, Fils immediately reached out to his father, expressing his joy and excitement. “Wow, that feels good, that feels good,” he exclaimed. “It’s a lot of training, a lot of things, a lot of sacrifice.” He also emphasized the significance of their achievement, noting that it was the first time two Black players had faced off in an ATP Masters 1000 final. Fils expressed hope that their success would inspire others to pursue their dreams in tennis.
Resilience and Focus
The second set saw Tiafoe respond strongly, taking advantage of a lapse in Fils's focus. After saving three break points in the second game, Fils ultimately faltered, allowing Tiafoe to take a 3-0 lead and level the match after 54 minutes. Following the set, Tiafoe sought treatment for a hip issue that had been bothering him. However, Fils regained his composure in the final set, breaking Tiafoe twice to surge ahead 4-0 and ultimately closing out the match decisively.
Reflecting on his performance, Fils noted that a brief self-reflection after the second set helped him refocus. “I started the first set very, very strong,” he said. “In the second set, I lost a bit of focus, but I had a small talk with myself in front of the mirror. I said, ‘if you are going to lose, it cannot get worse than this. You need to fight.’” Fils acknowledged the relief he felt after overcoming injuries that had previously hindered his progress, stating, “It was a hell of a week. We made a hell of a job and it is not done yet.”
