The 2026 Pune racing season is poised to kick off on July 17, running through to November 15, as announced by the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). This year’s schedule features 21 race days over a span of four months, with a total prize pool of ₹14 crore, promising an exciting season for racing enthusiasts.

Key Races and Highlights

Among the standout events is the Villoo C. Poonawalla Pune Derby (Gr. 1), which boasts a lucrative prize of ₹1 crore, making it the season's most sought-after race. Additionally, the Indian St. Leger (Gr. 1) will take place, known for its rigorous demands on stamina, with a prize of ₹75 lakh. The season is set to feature a diverse array of races, ensuring a thrilling experience for both participants and spectators alike.

Currently, the Pune Race Course is home to 844 horses, including 281 two-year-olds, indicating a healthy mix of seasoned competitors and emerging talent. The competitive landscape is further enhanced by the presence of 29 ‘A’ licensed trainers and 51 ‘A’ licensed jockeys, all of whom are expected to uphold a high standard of racing throughout the season. Notably, outstation horses will be permitted to compete, with restrictions only in lower classes, a move anticipated to elevate the level of competition.

Support and Sponsorship

The RWITC has secured significant sponsorship from various contributors, including M/s. Cyrus and Adar Poonawalla, Raptakos Brett & Co. Ltd., and the family of the late Trainer Altaf Hussain, among others. Their support is crucial in facilitating the season's events and enhancing the overall racing experience.

Several important races are scheduled throughout the season, including the Eve Champion Trophy and the Altaf Hussain Million on August 2, the Pune City Gold Cup on September 12, and the Villoo C. Poonawalla Pune Derby on October 11. The racing calendar is packed with events designed to showcase the best in equestrian talent, culminating in the Burgundy Mantra Luxury Line RWITC Ltd. Trophy on November 15.
