Vidhi, a shot put athlete, disqualified from Asian U23 Championships after testing positive for banned substances.

Vidhi Choudhary, a promising shot put athlete from Uttar Pradesh, has been disqualified from competing in the upcoming Asian U23 Athletics Championships in Ordos, China, due to a failed doping test. The 21-year-old athlete, who previously secured a gold medal at the 2025 National Games, was part of a 54-member Indian team set to participate in the championships scheduled from July 9 to 12.

A source familiar with the situation confirmed to PTI that Choudhary's doping violation has led to her exclusion from the event, although specific details regarding the nature of the violation were not disclosed. When reached for comment, Choudhary acknowledged her withdrawal, stating, "I will not be travelling for the championships," but did not provide further information.

Recent Achievements and Performance

Choudhary's doping sample was collected during an out-of-competition test in May. Earlier this season, she showcased her talent by winning gold at the senior Federation Cup with a throw of 16.10 meters. Additionally, she achieved her personal best of 16.35 meters, finishing second in the Indian Athletics Series held in Sangrur, Punjab, on May 9.

In a related development, another young athlete, Nipam Chauhan, has also faced doping allegations. The 19-year-old sprinter, who earned a medal at the Asian U20 Championships, has tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol and its metabolites on two occasions. Chauhan's first sample was taken during the junior Federation Cup in Tumkur, Karnataka, on April 24, where she set a new junior national record by clocking 11.53 seconds in the 100 meters. A subsequent sample was collected out-of-competition in Bengaluru on May 12.

Implications for Indian Athletics

Chauhan's provisional suspension raises concerns for Indian athletics, particularly regarding the potential loss of the medals she earned at the Asian U20 Championships, where she secured an individual bronze in the 100 meters and a silver in the 4x100 meter relay. If found guilty of doping violations, the repercussions could significantly impact India's standing in the sport.
