ITTF President Sorling expresses optimism about India's advancement.

Petra Sorling, the president of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), is determined to expand the reach of table tennis while ensuring the sport's financial viability. At 55 years old, Sorling is entering her second term, which will run from 2025 to 2029, with a clear focus on achieving long-term financial stability for the ITTF Group. This comes in light of a concerning financial report indicating a net deficit of $14.4 million for 2025, a stark contrast to the $1.5 million profit recorded the previous year.

Strategic Vision for Financial Stability

In an interview with The Hindu during the UTT Season 7 event, Sorling emphasized the importance of building a robust brand for table tennis. She noted that the quality of event presentations, particularly through the World Table Tennis (WTT) initiative, has significantly improved. Local organizers have enhanced their operations, contributing to a more professional image of the sport globally. “We have delivered events all over the world, but we have invested a lot too. That is where financial sustainability comes in,” she explained. Sorling believes that the ITTF Group has successfully transitioned from its initial start-up phase and is now poised to solidify its financial foundation.

Encouraging Growth in Indian Table Tennis

Sorling expressed optimism about the future of table tennis in India, highlighting the role of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) in fostering young talent. She mentioned 15-year-old Divyanshi Bhowmick, who recently performed well at the Asian Youth Championships in Bangkok while representing Dabang Delhi. “I am sure we will see many more stars coming from India,” she remarked, indicating her belief in the potential of Indian players to shine on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Sorling sees vast opportunities for growth within the sport, particularly with advancements in technology such as artificial intelligence and the integration of e-sports into table tennis. She also pointed out the significance of the mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, which will increase the number of medal events for table tennis to six. “It’s both an opportunity and a challenge because we want to deliver all of this with quality. For that, we have to prioritize,” she concluded, underscoring her commitment to the sport's future.
