Sindhu aims for historic sixth medal at World Championships

Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu is set to embark on her quest for a historic sixth medal at the World Championships, commencing on Monday. This achievement would make her the first female player in the women’s singles category to secure six medals in the prestigious tournament's history.

Having recently clinched a title at the Japan Open, Sindhu expressed that this victory has significantly boosted her confidence as she prepares for the World Championships. “It has been quite good, physically and mentally. I have been able to see the changes in terms of my game and my movement,” she remarked, highlighting her positive outlook heading into the competition.

Adapting to Evolving Challenges

Throughout her illustrious career, Sindhu has maintained a relentless passion for the sport. “I know it is in me and I can still do it,” she stated, emphasizing her enduring commitment. However, she acknowledged that the dynamics of women’s singles badminton have shifted over the years. “Women’s singles used to be more attacking and fast-paced. Now it is more about long rallies, patience, and staying on court for a longer period,” she explained, reflecting on the evolving nature of the game.

With years of experience under her belt, Sindhu feels equipped to navigate the various challenges that arise during matches. “I’m much more experienced now in terms of how to deal with different conditions on court,” she noted. She elaborated on the need for adaptability, stating, “Sometimes there is drift, and sometimes you cannot control the shuttle the way you want. You have to change accordingly and make things convenient for yourself.”

Handling Pressure at Home

Competing in her home country adds an extra layer of expectation for Sindhu, but she remains unfazed by the pressure that accompanies high-stakes matches. “I have played a lot of first-round matches where I had butterflies and there is a lot of pressure… at the same time, there is nothing to lose,” she said. Her focus is clear: “I just want to give my best because I have trained hard and I have worked hard in my training sessions.”
