From Inspiration to Aspiration
Robles recalls the pivotal moment when he first encountered Boll’s playing style. “I started watching him when I was 16 or 17. He was in his prime, and I took a lot of motivation from his game,” he shared. The advent of the internet allowed him to access videos of Boll, which further fueled his desire to emulate the German star. “I began copying him in practice, trying to adopt every skill I could as a left-hander,” he explained. His move to Germany was a significant turning point, providing him with invaluable insights into training methodologies and the mindset required to excel at the highest levels of the sport.
Despite the challenges of relocating as a teenager, Robles reflects positively on the experience. “It was a difficult choice, but it was a beautiful journey of discovery,” he stated. He acknowledges the support of his family, who, despite their uncertainty about his future in table tennis, encouraged his ambitions. “I am grateful for their support, which allowed me to develop my career and personality,” he added.
The Evolution of Spanish Table Tennis
Robles has witnessed significant changes in Spanish table tennis over the past two decades. “We have improved the medium level of players considerably,” he noted, highlighting that around 20 Spanish players now compete at a similar level, with many ranked between 100 and 300 globally. He believes the next step is to increase the number of players in the top 100. “We have some exceptional young talents in the under-13, under-15, and under-17 categories achieving remarkable results internationally,” he remarked.
As he balances his professional commitments with family life, Robles emphasizes the importance of maintaining consistency in his training. “For ten years, I have been in the top 100, and it requires immense dedication,” he explained. He aspires to continue competing at a high level, with the ultimate goal of participating in another Olympic Games. “Winning an Olympic medal is incredibly challenging, but I am committed to giving my best,” he concluded, embodying the spirit of perseverance that has defined his career.
