According to the official circular, the BFI aims to establish a transparent and thorough selection process to ensure that the country's top talent is represented on the international stage. Under the new guidelines, Asian Games medallists will be designated as the primary entries in their respective weight divisions, while gold medallists from the upcoming 10th National Championships will be named as reserve entries.
Selection pathways for national and international competition
The 10th National Championships, scheduled for December, will play a pivotal role in shaping the squad. While Guwahati will host the women’s competition, the men’s event is set to take place in Patna. For weight categories where India did not secure medals at the Asian Games, or for specific LA28 weight classes not featured in the Asiad—such as the men’s 65kg and the women’s 57kg and 70kg divisions—the gold medallists from the National Championships will be promoted to main entry status.
The BFI has also outlined a clear roadmap for boxers aiming to secure Olympic quotas. Beyond the World Championships, additional opportunities will arise through an Asian qualifier in China next year, followed by two global qualifying tournaments in Italy and Hungary in 2028. Boxers who reach the quota bout round at the World Championships but fall short of victory will be granted direct entry into the Asian qualifiers, ensuring a second chance at securing a spot for Los Angeles.
Building the national camp and future qualification
The federation has confirmed that the national training camp will be composed of Asian Games medallists, winners from the 10th National Championships, and select wild-card entries chosen by the BFI selection committee. For any remaining slots, the BFI will conduct ranking selection trials among elite national campers to ensure the final squad is merit-based.
For non-Olympic weight categories, the selection criteria remain straightforward: gold medallists from the National Championships will represent India at the World Championships in Kazakhstan, with silver medallists serving as the designated reserves. A BFI official noted that the policy was designed to be comprehensive and fair, ensuring that no high-performing athlete is overlooked as the federation looks toward the 2028 Olympic horizon.
