The
Mariota’s departure proved particularly challenging for Washington, as he was already filling in for franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels has been sidelined for two consecutive games due to a dislocated left elbow. The injury to Mariota occurred when he was sacked by Colts defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore on a third-and-goal play from the 6-yard line. Although he was able to walk to the locker room under his own power following an initial evaluation in the medical tent, the team officially ruled him out at halftime.
Rookie thrust into action amid injury crisis
The transition to Athan Kaliakmanis marked the rookie's first appearance in an NFL game. Before his exit, Mariota had managed to record 46 passing yards and contributed a 35-yard run on a zone-read keeper that set up a field goal for the Commanders. Mariota, who is currently in his third season with the organization and has 10 career starts to his name, had previously led Washington to a 33-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks just one week prior, throwing for 183 yards and three touchdowns.
The injury to the quarterback position was part of a broader day of attrition for the Commanders. The team was already managing the absence of star wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained during Friday's practice, and starting right guard Sam Cosmi, who missed his second straight game. The injury toll continued into the second half, with defensive end Charles Omenihu ruled out at halftime due to a groin issue. Furthermore, wide receiver Jaylin Lane was carted off the field in the third quarter after suffering an apparent lower left leg injury during a kickoff return.
