Antim Panghal Reflects on Silver Medal Success at Asian Games

Indian wrestler Antim Panghal has expressed a mix of emotions following her performance at the Asian Games, where she secured a silver medal in the women's 53kg division. While the 21-year-old admitted to feeling disappointed about missing out on the top spot of the podium, she remains proud of her achievement and the progress she has demonstrated on the international stage.

The final bout saw Panghal face off against Japan's Moe Kiyooka, the reigning 55kg world champion. Despite a valiant effort, Panghal was unable to overcome her opponent, ultimately settling for silver. This result represents an improvement for the Haryana-born athlete, who previously claimed a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Games in 2023.

A Dominant Path to the Final

Panghal’s journey to the gold medal match was defined by a series of commanding performances. She began her campaign with a decisive 9-0 victory over Kazakhstan's Shugyla Omirbek, followed by an 8-0 shutout of Uzbekistan's Sakibjamal Esbosynova in the quarterfinals. Her semifinal clash against China's Jin Zhang proved to be a test of character; after falling behind early, Panghal rallied to score six unanswered points, securing a 6-1 win and a place in the final.

By reaching the title bout, the young wrestler joined an exclusive list of Indian athletes, becoming only the third woman from her country, alongside Geetika Jakhar and Vinesh Phogat, to compete in an Asian Games wrestling final. She stood out as the sole female wrestler from India to secure a medal at this edition of the Games, with the nation's other five wrestling medals claimed by male competitors.

Looking Toward the Future

Reflecting on her journey, Panghal acknowledged the rigorous training and personal sacrifices required to compete at such a high level. She credited her success to a support system that includes the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the Inspire Institute of Sport, and Parth Jindal. Looking ahead, she remains focused on using this experience as a foundation for future growth.

“Of course, I'm a little disappointed that I couldn't win gold, but I'm still very proud to have won a silver medal for India at the Asian Games,” Panghal stated. “Every athlete dreams of winning a medal for the country, and to be able to do that on this stage means a lot to me. I'll take this experience, learn from it and keep working hard to come back stronger.”
