Panthers' Tommy Tremble admits taunting penalty was retaliation for teammate

Carolina Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble played a pivotal role in his team's 25-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, though his standout performance was marred by a costly disciplinary lapse. Tremble, who hauled in two touchdowns during the contest at Lincoln Financial Field, drew a taunting penalty in the fourth quarter after pointing directly at Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean following a 19-yard scoring reception.

The unsportsmanlike conduct flag pushed the subsequent extra point attempt back to 48 yards, which kicker Ryan Fitzgerald ultimately missed. Following the game, Tremble acknowledged that his actions were a calculated response to a previous play involving his teammate, tight end Mitchell Evans. Tremble explained that he took exception to an unnecessary roughness penalty called against DeJean earlier in the drive, which occurred during a brief skirmish between the defensive back and Evans.

Retaliation and locker room reaction

The incident involving Evans occurred after a five-yard run by Chuba Hubbard. Evans was sent to the ground during the exchange, an event he later described with a touch of humor, noting he began to cramp mid-air. While the Panthers benefited from the 15-yard penalty, Tremble admitted he found the hit on his teammate egregious. Although he conceded that his own reaction was not professional, he noted that the heat of the moment led to the lapse in judgment.

DeJean offered a different perspective on the earlier penalty, expressing frustration over the officiating. The defensive back stated that he was being held down and simply attempted to stand up, denying the suggestion that he had lifted and slammed Evans to the turf. Despite the controversy, the Panthers' locker room remained supportive of Tremble. Wide receiver Jalen Coker praised the tight end's versatility and leadership, describing him as the heart and soul of the team.

A career-best performance

Beyond the penalty, Tremble’s impact on the game was significant. He finished the afternoon with four receptions for 46 yards and both of Carolina's touchdowns. His performance was bolstered by quarterback Bryce Young, who had identified the tight end as a primary target for the game-sealing play during their weekly practice sessions. Young, who has now recorded 11 passing touchdowns through the first five games of the season, successfully connected with Tremble to secure the win.

As Tremble plays out the final year of his current contract, his ability to contribute as both a receiver and a versatile blocker has become increasingly important to the Panthers' offensive momentum. While he expects to face a fine for his taunting infraction, his teammates emphasized that his willingness to defend his peers has only strengthened his standing within the squad.
