Minkah Fitzpatrick Ends Jets' Historic 21-Game Interception Drought

The New York Jets have finally brought an end to one of the most frustrating streaks in NFL history. During Sunday’s matchup against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted a pass from quarterback Tyson Bagent, marking the team's first interception in 21 games.

The pivotal moment occurred in the second quarter, providing a much-needed spark for the Jets. The team immediately capitalized on the turnover, converting the takeaway into a field goal to narrow the Bears' lead to 7-3. This play concluded a staggering drought that saw the Jets go 643 pass attempts and 638 days without recording a single interception.

A Historic Slump Finally Concluded

Before Sunday’s breakthrough, the Jets had not secured an interception since January 5, 2025, when then-safety Ashtyn Davis picked off Miami Dolphins quarterback Tyler Huntley in the final game of the 2024 regular season. The 2025 campaign proved particularly difficult, as the Jets became the first team since the NFL began tracking the statistic in 1933 to complete an entire season without recording a single interception.

Over the course of the 21-game dry spell, the Jets faced 20 different opposing quarterbacks, including rookies and backups, without managing to secure a takeaway. The streak began in the 2025 season opener against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Near-misses were a source of significant frustration, most notably earlier in Sunday's game when nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat appeared to secure a deflected pass, only for the play to be nullified by a penalty on cornerback Azareye'h Thomas.

Coaching Frustrations and Historical Context

The prolonged inability to force turnovers had become a recurring point of contention for the team, with players and coaches frequently fielding questions regarding the statistical anomaly. The situation was particularly ironic given that the team is coached by Aaron Glenn, a former Pro Bowl cornerback who recorded 41 interceptions during his own 15-season playing career.

The drought had drawn attention from across the league, with former Jets coach Herm Edwards recently expressing his disbelief at the situation. Edwards, who tallied 33 interceptions during his 11-year career, described the streak as the most remarkable statistic he had ever encountered. He noted that despite the coaching staff's efforts, the team had been unable to capitalize on even the most routine opportunities, such as tipped balls, until Fitzpatrick finally broke the cycle at Soldier Field.
