Dallas Cowboys Acquire Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in Trade with Pittsburgh Steelers

The Dallas Cowboys have bolstered their secondary by acquiring cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The deal, confirmed by the Cowboys on Thursday, sees Pittsburgh receive a 2027 sixth-round draft pick and a 2028 second-round selection in exchange for the defensive back. This transaction marks the third time in two years that the two franchises have engaged in trade negotiations.

Porter, who was selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has been sidelined throughout the first three weeks of the current season due to a back injury. The trade follows an extended period of unsuccessful contract extension negotiations, with reports indicating a significant gap between the team's valuation of the player and his own salary expectations. The situation eventually reached an impasse, leading to the cornerback's desire to depart the organization.

Addressing Defensive Needs in Dallas

For the Cowboys, the move is a strategic attempt to address a struggling secondary that has been hampered by injuries. The team is currently managing the absences of cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr., alongside significant depth issues at the safety position. With the Cowboys failing to record an interception through their first three games and allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 72.6% of their passes, the arrival of a player known for his man-to-man coverage skills is viewed as a necessary reinforcement.

Despite the acquisition, the Cowboys do not currently plan to offer Porter a contract extension during the season. He is expected to play out the remainder of his current deal, with the possibility of the team utilizing the franchise or transition tag in the future. There is a potential for Porter to make his debut for his new team as early as Sunday against the Houston Texans, a familiar opponent he last faced during the Steelers' wild-card-round loss in January.

Impact on the Steelers' Roster

The departure of Porter leaves a void in the Pittsburgh secondary, though the team remains optimistic about its internal depth. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has increasingly utilized zone coverage schemes, and the team has seen promising development from rookie Daylen Everette. Standing at 6-foot-1, Everette offers a similar physical profile to Porter and has already demonstrated his capability during extended playing time in recent weeks.

While the Steelers have secured additional draft capital for the future, the trade concludes a saga that had become a distraction early in the season. With the addition of the 2028 second-round pick and the existing depth in their defensive backfield, Pittsburgh will now look to move forward with their current roster while evaluating potential future additions to their secondary.
