Quarterback Depth Challenges for Atlanta
The Falcons have faced significant hurdles regarding their signal-callers throughout the lead-up to the season. Michael Penix Jr., who is continuing his recovery from a torn left ACL suffered last November, has been ruled inactive for the game. Penix only received clearance for full practice participation on August 24 and did not see any action during the preseason, leaving him unavailable for live game situations.
With Tagovailoa sidelined and Penix unavailable, the responsibility falls to Rush, who joined the organization on July 29, the opening day of training camp. Rush took all first-team repetitions during practice on both Thursday and Friday as the coaching staff adjusted to the shifting availability of their roster. The team is currently carrying four quarterbacks, including undrafted rookie Jack Strand, who is now slated to serve as the backup to Rush against Pittsburgh.
Managing Injuries Throughout Camp
The current injury concerns follow a series of health-related issues that have impacted the position group since the start of training camp. Tagovailoa previously dealt with a tight back that caused him to miss the initial practices of the summer. However, head coach Kevin Stefanski clarified on Friday that the current oblique issue is unrelated to the back tightness Tagovailoa experienced earlier in the preseason.
The Falcons' quarterback depth chart has seen further movement, including the release of Trevor Siemian at the start of training camp due to injury. As the team prepares for the upcoming game, the focus remains on Rush to stabilize the offense under the current circumstances. The organization continues to monitor the health of its roster as they head into the weekend clash against the Steelers.
