C.J. Stroud and Houston Texans Postpone Contract Extension Talks Until Offseason

The Houston Texans and star quarterback C.J. Stroud have decided to table negotiations regarding a long-term contract extension until the conclusion of the current season. While both parties explored the possibility of finalizing an agreement before the start of the regular season, they have reached a mutual understanding that postponing talks is the preferred path forward.

General manager Nick Caserio had previously established a clear timeline for the organization, noting that once the regular season commences, contract discussions are typically shelved until the following year. Stroud, who remains committed to his future in Houston, has opted to play out the remainder of his current four-year, $36.28 million rookie contract. The franchise has already secured his services through the 2027 season by exercising his $25.9 million fully guaranteed fifth-year option.

Furthermore, the upcoming offseason will see a wave of young talent becoming eligible for extensions, including Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Bo Nix, and Jayden Daniels. These developments, combined with the anticipated record-setting contract for Lamar Jackson, suggest that waiting could prove advantageous for Stroud. By betting on his performance in the upcoming campaign, the quarterback positions himself to capitalize on a market that is expected to reach new heights.

Stroud’s career in Houston has been marked by notable highs and recent challenges. After a standout 2023 rookie campaign where he recorded 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, his production fluctuated over the following two seasons. During the 2024 season, he threw for 3,727 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while enduring 52 sacks. His 2025 campaign saw him finish with 3,041 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, though his season was impacted by a concussion that forced him to miss three games.
