Colts WR Josh Downs set to play against Jaguars despite trade request

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs is expected to suit up and play his standard role in Sunday’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Shane Steichen confirmed the receiver's availability following a week of uncertainty surrounding the player's future with the franchise.

The decision comes after Downs formally requested a trade earlier this week, a move that coincided with a period of upheaval within the Colts organization. The team recently parted ways with general manager Chris Ballard on October 19, and the roster has seen the departure of key veterans, including offensive lineman Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who were traded to the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, respectively.

Focusing on the immediate challenge

Steichen revealed that he held direct discussions with the receiver regarding his professional obligations during this turbulent period. The coach emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the upcoming game despite the off-field distractions. According to Steichen, he reminded the player of his professional responsibilities, telling him that while a request had been made, he remained a member of the team and was expected to perform on Sunday.

Addressing the media, Steichen expressed confidence in the receiver's preparation throughout the week. He noted that Downs participated in practice sessions and demonstrated the professionalism required to contribute to the game plan. The coaching staff expects him to be at his best when they face the Jaguars.

Navigating a challenging season

Downs has been a focal point of the Indianapolis passing attack this season, currently leading the team with 307 receiving yards. His role has expanded significantly due to the absence of primary receiver Alec Pierce, and the offense has faced additional pressure with top tight end Tyler Warren sidelined for the previous two contests. These absences have resulted in increased defensive attention for Downs, contributing to a career-low catch rate of 56.5 percent.

The receiver, who is currently in the final year of his rookie contract, acknowledged the situation earlier this week, stating that he was focused on the immediate task of preparing for the Jaguars. While reports indicate that other teams have inquired about his availability, the Colts have not confirmed whether they intend to facilitate a move. For now, the focus remains on the field as the team prepares for their upcoming divisional clash.
