Shreyas Iyer admits bowling lapses as India falls to New Zealand in fourth T20I

India captain Shreyas Iyer has identified his side's bowling performance as the decisive factor in their heavy 87-run defeat to New Zealand during the fourth T20I in Auckland on Friday. The loss, which narrowed India's series lead to 3-1, saw the hosts post an imposing total of 259/7, a target that proved far beyond the reach of the visiting side.

The match was defined by a blistering batting display from Glenn Phillips, who hammered 107 off just 49 deliveries, supported by Michael Bracewell’s rapid 65 from 25 balls. India’s chase never gained the necessary momentum, and they were eventually bowled out for 172/9. Iyer conceded that the momentum shifted early in the contest, particularly during the powerplay overs.

Iyer credits Phillips as India looks to regroup

Reflecting on the result, the India skipper noted that the team failed to contain the New Zealand batters from the outset. He specifically highlighted the third over as a turning point where the hosts seized control of the game. Despite the disappointment of the result, Iyer was quick to laud the quality of Phillips’ innings, which featured 10 sixes and six boundaries.

Describing the performance as exceptional, Iyer remarked that the shots played by Phillips were pure bliss to watch. He acknowledged the consistency the New Zealand batter has shown throughout the series, suggesting that there are valuable lessons for his own squad to take from the display. The captain also addressed the difficulties some of his players faced in adapting to the specific ground dimensions in Auckland, noting that the challenge is significant for those experiencing such conditions for the first time.

Focus shifts to Hamilton for series finale

Looking ahead to the final match of the series in Hamilton, Iyer emphasised the importance of returning to the drawing board to address the tactical shortcomings exposed in this defeat. He remains confident that the team can bounce back, framing the loss as a vital learning curve for his players.

Iyer defended the squad’s overall effort, pointing to their magnificent performance in the first three matches of the series as evidence of their capabilities. He expressed optimism that the experience gained in Auckland would better prepare the team for future encounters in similar conditions. The focus now shifts to the final T20I, where India aims to refine their execution and finish the series on a positive note.
