Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Anterio Thompson has shared the difficult news that his professional football career has come to an abrupt end. The rookie, who was selected by the franchise in the sixth round of the 2026 draft, revealed via social media that he has been diagnosed with a genetic mutation of his spinal cord.

In a candid post on Instagram, the 24-year-old explained that medical professionals informed him he would no longer be able to participate in the sport. Thompson expressed the emotional toll of the diagnosis, noting the sudden transition from the excitement of reaching the professional level to the reality of an unexpected medical retirement.

A sudden end to a promising career

Thompson had been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list during training camp and had not been present with the team since the spring. Prior to his social media announcement, neither the player's representatives nor the Falcons organization had disclosed details regarding his health status. When questioned about the rookie's situation on Friday, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that he had no updates to provide.

Reflecting on the diagnosis, Thompson wrote that he has maintained a positive mindset despite the circumstances. He acknowledged the difficulty of having his career cut short, stating that while every athlete understands they will eventually have to retire, most hope to do so on their own terms. He described the experience as a jarring shift from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

Transitioning away from the field

Although Thompson was technically eligible to return to the active roster from the reserve/non-football injury list during the current season, his public statement indicates that such a return is no longer a possibility. The defensive lineman, who previously recorded 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss during his final season at the University of Washington, has not provided further comment beyond his initial post.
