When asked during a media session on Tuesday whether Gordon would play for the organization again, Poles remained non-committal. While expressing a desire for the player to return, the general manager emphasized that the recovery process has not met the team's expectations, leaving the cornerback's status for the remainder of the season in question.
A prolonged recovery process
Gordon’s absence has been a significant point of concern throughout the offseason, as he missed all of the team's spring workouts and the entirety of training camp. Although he has been present at Halas Hall working with the training staff, Poles declined to provide specific details regarding the nature of the injury or the reasons behind the slow rehabilitation. The general manager noted that the recovery has been hampered by persistent discomfort, which has prevented the player from reaching the necessary milestones to return to active duty.
Under the current roster rules, Gordon is required to miss the Bears' first four games of the season. He is eligible to return to practice on September 21, though Poles clarified that there is no definitive timetable for his return to game action. The situation has been described as a source of mutual frustration for both the team and the player, particularly following a 2025 season where Gordon was limited to just five appearances, including the postseason, due to multiple stints on injured reserve.
Adjusting the defensive secondary
In the wake of Gordon's absence, the Bears have been forced to reconfigure their defensive secondary. During training camp, the team turned to rookie Malik Muhammad, who is now slated to take over the starting nickel role. Additionally, the team acquired Clark Phillips III from Atlanta in a trade that saw defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. move to the Falcons, providing further depth to the position group.
Despite the uncertainty, the organization maintains that Gordon is continuing his rehabilitation efforts. Head coach Ben Johnson has previously stated that there is a structured plan in place for the cornerback, though the team remains in a holding pattern until the player can overcome the physical hurdles currently preventing his return to the gridiron.
