Caleb Williams facing multi-week recovery following hamstring injury

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is facing a recovery timeline of three to four weeks after sustaining a Grade 2 hamstring injury. While medical assessments suggest this typical recovery window, the organization has maintained a week-to-week designation for their star signal-caller, leaving the door open for a potential return should he prove to be a quick healer.

The injury occurred during the fourth quarter of the Bears' 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week. Williams went down without contact and was carted off the field in significant pain. Reports indicate the discomfort was likely exacerbated by the breaking up of scar tissue from a previous hamstring injury sustained during his college career, though the issue is not expected to cause long-term damage.

Quarterback uncertainty for Chicago

Head coach Ben Johnson has been cautious regarding the team's quarterback situation, describing the initial imaging results as somewhat encouraging while declining to set a firm return date. Johnson emphasized that Williams has historically recovered faster than anticipated, noting that the player is approaching his rehabilitation with high intensity. The Bears have opted not to place Williams on injured reserve, a decision that keeps his potential return for the Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons as a viable target.

The injury has created a significant depth challenge for the Bears, who have officially ruled Williams out for their upcoming Monday night clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. The situation was further complicated on Tuesday when backup quarterback Tyson Bagent entered the NFL's concussion protocol. Although Bagent was a full participant in Saturday's practice, he remains officially questionable for the game.

Should Bagent be unable to clear the final stages of the protocol, the starting role may fall to 38-year-old veteran Case Keenum. Keenum has not started an NFL game since his 2023 stint with the Houston Texans. Coach Johnson acknowledged the tactical differences between his available options, noting that while the skill sets vary, both remaining quarterbacks are cerebral players who will be mentally prepared for the challenge. If the three-to-four-week recovery estimate holds, Williams would also be sidelined for upcoming contests against the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers.
