A Long Road to Recovery for Williams
Williams suffered the season-ending injury on November 2, 2025, during a matchup against the New York Giants. His rookie campaign was cut short after nine appearances, during which he recorded 20 tackles and one sack while demonstrating versatility by lining up as an edge rusher on early downs and moving inside during passing situations. Reflecting on his rehabilitation, Williams credited teammate Nick Bosa for providing support throughout the recovery process, as Bosa navigated his own injury challenges simultaneously.
The 49ers have faced a challenging start to the season regarding personnel availability, with several key defensive linemen—including Bosa, Sam Okuayinonu, Alfred Collins, C.J. West, and James Thompson Jr.—dealing with various ailments. Williams admitted that watching from the sidelines has been difficult, but he feels physically prepared to contribute immediately. To accommodate his return, the organization released defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday, though he remains a candidate for the practice squad.
Rotation Plans and Injury Updates
Regarding expectations for Sunday, Shanahan indicated that there will be no specific snap count limitations placed on Williams. While the coaching staff plans to monitor his performance given the length of his absence, the intention is for him to be a full participant within the defensive end rotation, which currently features Keion White, Khalid Kareem, and rookie Romello Height.
The team also provided updates on other roster members ahead of the Seahawks game. Wide receiver Mike Evans has been cleared to play despite a rib injury. Conversely, the 49ers will be without Bosa, Thompson, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and safety Marques Sigle. Additionally, cornerback Upton Stout is listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury after a limited practice schedule throughout the week.
