Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton is ensuring his return to the court is a memorable occasion for his alma mater, purchasing tickets for the student section at Iowa State for Wednesday's preseason matchup. The gesture allows local students to attend the game through a university-run lottery, bringing a collegiate atmosphere to the professional exhibition.

The event holds personal significance for the guard, who spent two seasons playing for the Cyclones between 2018 and 2020 before entering the NBA. Haliburton, who met his wife, Jade, at the university and famously proposed to her on the Iowa State court, expressed excitement about the unique venue choice. He noted that the idea of hosting a game at his former school was an easy sell, particularly given that Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan is a Des Moines native.

A long-awaited return to the hardwood

Wednesday’s game serves as a major milestone for Haliburton, marking his first competitive appearance in over 16 months. The star player has been sidelined since suffering a torn Achilles during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. While he remains uncertain about his exact minutes, Haliburton indicated his hope to play at least through the first half of the contest.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle confirmed that the exhibition was originally slated for 2025 but was delayed following Haliburton’s injury. Reflecting on the upcoming atmosphere, Haliburton acknowledged the intensity of the local fanbase. He told reporters in Indianapolis that he is looking forward to the energy, noting that the current student body possesses a unique passion for Iowa State that will likely make for an entertaining environment, even if the crowd isn't entirely comprised of Pacers supporters.
