Payton Pritchard Secures Two-Year Extension with Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have secured the long-term future of guard Payton Pritchard, reaching an agreement on a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension. The deal, confirmed by CAA co-head of basketball Austin Brown and agent Max Saidman, includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season, providing both the franchise and the player flexibility for the future.

This fully guaranteed extension rewards the 28-year-old for a breakout season that saw him emerge as a vital component of the Celtics' rotation. As the reigning 2025 Sixth Man of the Year and a member of the 2024 NBA championship squad, Pritchard has solidified his standing within the organization following a campaign defined by significant individual growth.

A Career-Best Campaign

Pritchard’s expanded role last season was instrumental in maintaining the Celtics' offensive momentum. Stepping into the starting lineup for 50 games, he effectively filled the void left by Jayson Tatum’s extended absence. His statistical output reflected this increased responsibility, as he posted career highs with 17 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game.

The shift in his offensive involvement was substantial. Pritchard’s touches per game climbed from 51.8 in the 2024-25 season to nearly 70 last year. This surge represented the second-largest increase among the 33 players who recorded at least 4,000 touches in both seasons, underscoring his evolution into a primary playmaker.

Durability and Elite Shooting

Beyond his scoring and playmaking, Pritchard has established himself as one of the most reliable shooters in franchise history. He is currently one of only four players to record at least 200 three-pointers in multiple seasons for Boston, joining an elite group that includes Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Antoine Walker.

His availability has been equally impressive throughout his six-year NBA career. Over the past three seasons, Pritchard has appeared in 241 games, a mark that ranks him tied for third-most in the league during that period. With this new agreement, the Celtics ensure that one of their most durable and productive contributors remains in Boston as they continue to build on their recent championship success.
