The National Basketball Association has officially unveiled a comprehensive framework designed to govern the burgeoning sector of NBA-related prediction markets. This strategic move includes a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission, alongside the appointment of Kalshi and Polymarket as the league’s inaugural Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges.
These new agreements are centered on maintaining the integrity of the sport. The framework introduces strict safeguards, including specific limitations on the types of markets allowed, a total ban on league and team personnel trading NBA event contracts, and mandatory information-sharing protocols to assist in the investigation of any suspicious trading activity.
Establishing Regulatory Oversight and Partnerships
Scott Kaufman-Ross, the NBA’s Head of Media Distribution and Partnerships, emphasized that the primary motivation behind these agreements is the protection of the game. By working directly with regulators and operators, the league aims to foster a secure environment for fans to engage with these new platforms. The collaboration with the CFTC ensures that there is a structured channel for cooperation and oversight, reinforcing the league's commitment to transparency.
As part of their designation as Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges, both Kalshi and Polymarket have secured the rights to utilize official NBA intellectual property and marketing assets within the United States. Furthermore, these platforms will be granted access to official league data provided by Sportradar, which will be used to settle authorized markets accurately.
Expanding the Authorized Operator Ecosystem
Beyond the primary partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket, the NBA is broadening its reach within the prediction market space. The league has expanded its existing relationship with DraftKings to incorporate prediction market offerings and nationwide promotional activities. This expansion is part of a wider strategy, with the NBA signaling its intent to integrate other current official sports betting partners into this new framework in the near future.
All entities designated as Authorized Prediction Market Operators will be required to adhere to the same rigorous integrity standards established by the league. These obligations include strict market restrictions that align with the NBA’s broader sports betting policies, ensuring that the expansion into prediction markets does not compromise the competitive fairness of the game. Representatives from both Kalshi and Polymarket expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting a shared focus on innovation, fan engagement, and the creation of a safe, transparent ecosystem for users.
