Leveraging the NBA's sophisticated player tracking technology, the Dunk Score captures the movement of players and the ball with remarkable precision. The system records the positions of 29 points on each player's body 60 times per second, creating a comprehensive dataset that includes the height, speed, and angles involved in every dunk. This data is then processed through a specialized mathematical model that evaluates various features to produce a final Dunk Score, transforming subjective opinions about dunks into objective metrics.
The Dunk Score is composed of four key subscores: Jump, Power, Style, and Defensive Contest. The Jump subscore assesses the player's vertical leap and distance from the basket at takeoff. Power measures the speed of the ball as it goes through the hoop, while Style evaluates the creativity and flair of the dunk. Finally, the Defensive Contest subscore considers the presence and height of defenders attempting to block the shot, adding context to the difficulty of the dunk.
