On Saturday, Ja Morant expressed that his offseason move from the Grizzlies to the Trail Blazers allows him to "start fresh" and clarify his misunderstood "bad guy" reputation.

Ja Morant describes his move to the Trail Blazers as a fresh beginning.

In a recent press conference in Las Vegas, Ja Morant expressed optimism about his future with the Portland Trail Blazers following his offseason trade from the Memphis Grizzlies. The two-time All-Star guard, who has faced challenges during his tenure in Memphis, emphasized that this new chapter offers him a chance to redefine his public persona, which he believes has been unfairly tarnished. "What would I like cleared up? I think you know the answer to that. My image. [That] I'm a bad guy," Morant stated, addressing the media for the first time since the trade in June. He reflected on his past, acknowledging his previous mistakes but asserting that he has moved on. "If I was that guy, y'all wouldn't be talking to me now. I wouldn't be here," he added.

Morant's time with the Grizzlies was marked by significant achievements, including four playoff appearances over seven seasons. However, his career was also marred by two gun-related suspensions in 2023, which included an eight-game ban for conduct detrimental to the league and a 25-game suspension to start the 2023-24 season. These incidents stemmed from his actions during an Instagram livestream. Additionally, he faced a one-game suspension in November due to a confrontation with coach Tuomas Iisalo. The Blazers acquired Morant in a trade that involved sending forwards Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis, hoping to integrate him into their already talented roster, which features stars like Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday.

A Fresh Start in Portland

Wearing a black polo adorned with the Trail Blazers' logo, Morant spoke about the excitement of joining a new team. "New home. New team. New organization," he remarked, highlighting his eagerness to showcase a different side of himself to Portland fans. He described this transition as an opportunity to start anew, stating, "It's like starting all over again. ... Over the years, I've grown a lot and learned a lot. My mindset changed. I feel more mature, and I'm ready to work." Morant, who averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 assists per game last season despite injuries limiting him to just 20 games, mentioned that he has been focusing on his fitness during the offseason.

Despite the potential for a crowded backcourt in Portland, Morant expressed his willingness to adapt, whether that means starting or coming off the bench. He has already begun building rapport with his new teammates during summer league activities. "All those guys will most likely unlock new parts of my game, and I'll do the same for them," he said, emphasizing the unselfish nature of the team. Morant also reflected fondly on his time in Memphis, stating that the city will always hold a special place in his heart, and he remains connected with many former teammates. "It definitely was some good years," he concluded, looking forward to what lies ahead in his career.
