The New Orleans Pelicans have secured the services of Bennedict Mathurin, with the 24-year-old guard agreeing to a two-year, $16 million contract. The agreement, which includes a player option, marks a significant addition to the Pelicans' roster as they continue to build around their young core.

Mathurin’s move to New Orleans follows a strategic decision to withdraw his $8.8 million qualifying offer from the LA Clippers. By opting for this shorter-term arrangement, the guard has prioritized both immediate flexibility and a quicker path to unrestricted free agency next summer, rather than pursuing longer-term contracts that would have granted the team more control over his future.

Strategic Fit and Career Progression

The Pelicans have been long-term admirers of Mathurin, having pursued the player for over a year. The organization views him as a vital component of their future plans, and the structure of this new contract also assists the franchise in remaining below the luxury tax threshold for the current season.

Mathurin’s arrival in New Orleans comes after a productive campaign last year, during which he split time between the Indiana Pacers and the LA Clippers. He was moved to the Clippers as part of a multi-player trade that saw center Ivica Zubac head to Indiana. Across 54 appearances last season, including 25 starts, Mathurin recorded career-high averages of 17.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 0.8 steals per game.

Notably, his scoring efficiency off the bench was among the best in the league; he averaged 17.5 points as a reserve, the highest mark in the NBA among players with at least 20 games played. Since being selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Pacers, Mathurin has established himself as a consistent contributor, boasting career averages of 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists across 263 career appearances over four seasons.
