India relies on experienced players for Women's Hockey at the Asian Games.

On July 10, 2026, India unveiled its women's hockey team for the upcoming Asian Games, featuring a blend of seasoned players and promising newcomers. The squad, consisting of 20 athletes, will be captained by Salima Tete, who has been instrumental in the team's recent successes, including a victory at the FIH Nations Cup in New Zealand. This triumph not only marked a significant achievement for the team but also ensured their return to the FIH Pro League after a challenging season.

Team Composition and Strategy

With the Asian Games set to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4, the Indian team is focused on securing a gold medal, which would also serve as a stepping stone towards qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed confidence in the squad's composition, highlighting the effective mix of youth and experience. "We have a group in which we have a nice balance between juniors, experienced players, and seniors who are constantly working to get the best out of each other," he stated.

The goalkeeping duties will be handled by veteran Savita, who was recently honored with the Padma Shri award, alongside Bichu Devi Kharibam. The defensive lineup includes Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Ishika Chaudhary, Jyoti, Lalthantluangi, and Shilpi Dabas, the latter two having made their senior debuts during the Nations Cup and earning their spots through commendable performances.

Forward Line and Recent Changes

In the midfield, Salima Tete will be joined by Nikki Pradhan, Sakshi Rana, Sunelita Toppo, Neha, and Deepika Soreng. The forward line is bolstered by Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Navneet Kaur, Deepika, Ishika, Baljeet Kaur, and Beauty Dungdung. Notably, the squad sees two changes from the Nations Cup team, with strikers Baljeet Kaur and Beauty Dungdung stepping in for Sonam and Annu.

Marijne concluded by emphasizing the team's readiness for the challenges ahead, stating, "This group of players has shown that they have the right form and fitness in recent months. We are confident that this team is ready for the challenge at the Asian Games."
