Allegations of Intimidation
In a letter addressed to key sports authorities, including the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Indian Olympic Association president P.T. Usha, Lakra expressed her dismay over the treatment of women athletes who speak out against harassment. She claims that those accused of misconduct are being shielded while whistleblowers face intimidation. “I write to you not merely as a former captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, a member of the Executive Board of Hockey India and a selector but as an Indian woman who chose to speak up when young female athletes were being sexually harassed,” Lakra stated in her correspondence.
Reflecting on her career, Lakra emphasized the dual responsibility of senior players to not only achieve success but also to safeguard the welfare of younger athletes. She recounted her efforts to alert the Jharkhand government about allegations against Sudhir Golla, which she claims led to a campaign of intimidation against her. “What followed has shaken my faith in the system. The machinery of intimidation was set in motion against me,” she asserted.
Response from Hockey India
In response to Lakra's allegations, Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and pledged to investigate the matter thoroughly. “Asunta Lakra is one of the treasures of Indian hockey. She has done a great service to the sport by bringing to light an unfortunate incident related to Jharkhand hockey,” Tirkey remarked. He noted that the Jharkhand government had already taken action against Golla, removing him from the Under-18 national team.
Tirkey further assured that he would engage with both Lakra and Singh to facilitate a resolution. “The dignity and respect of women is our top priority, and Hockey India remains fully committed to the same,” he concluded, emphasizing the organization's dedication to addressing these critical issues within the sport.
