Did France Miss Out on a Handball Call Prior to Giving Away a Penalty to Spain? Understanding the Rules

France's aspirations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 were dashed on Tuesday as they faced a 2-0 defeat against Spain in the semi-finals. Despite a stellar tournament performance leading up to this match, star player Kylian Mbappe struggled to make an impact and was unable to score. The match, however, was marred by controversy, particularly surrounding a penalty awarded to Spain, which drew sharp criticism from French head coach Didier Deschamps.

Controversial Penalty Decision

The pivotal moment of the match occurred in the 22nd minute when Lucas Digne misplayed the ball while attempting to clear it, inadvertently bringing down Spain's Lamine Yamal in the penalty area. Yamal had positioned himself ahead of Digne before the foul, leading referee Ivan Arcides Barton Cisneros to award a penalty kick. Mikel Oyarzabal successfully converted the penalty, putting Spain ahead. As the first half progressed, social media erupted with claims that Yamal had handled the ball prior to the foul, igniting a debate over the legitimacy of the penalty.

Referee Under Fire

In the aftermath of the match, Deschamps expressed his discontent with the officiating, particularly targeting the decision to award the penalty. "I'll ask a loaded question and I won't answer it," he remarked, questioning whether the referee was adequately prepared to officiate a World Cup semi-final. He added, "And I'm not saying this just because we lost today. There were quite a few situations. There were some favourable calls, too," although he did not specify further instances of concern.

The controversy surrounding the penalty decision has raised questions about the interpretation of the handball rule, as outlined by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). According to the laws, a handball is determined by the "T-shirt line," which indicates that contact above the armpit is not considered a foul. In Yamal's case, while the ball did appear to touch his arm, it was positioned close to his body, suggesting that it did not meet the criteria for a handball offense under current regulations.
