Former England international
In a video message shared by Fenerbahce, Greenwood expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating, “It was a no-brainer when they (were) interested in me. It's the biggest club in Turkey and I can't wait to get started.” His arrival comes as Fenerbahce aims to reclaim its status in Turkish football, having not won the league title since 2014, while their city rivals Galatasaray have dominated the scene with seven championships during that period, including the last four consecutive titles.
Champions League Aspirations
As the runner-up in the previous season, Fenerbahce is set to kick off its Champions League journey next week, where they will host Gornik Zabrze in the first leg of the second qualifying round. The club is eager to make a significant impact in European competitions, and Greenwood's addition is seen as a vital step towards achieving that goal.
Greenwood's career has seen a tumultuous path since being sidelined by Manchester United in 2022 due to serious allegations involving assault. Although he faced charges of attempted rape and controlling behavior, the case was ultimately dropped. Following his exit from United, Greenwood spent two years at Marseille, where he found his form again, scoring 21 league goals in the 2024-25 season, tying for the top spot with Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain.
International Career and Future Prospects
Despite his talent, Greenwood's international career has been limited. He made a single appearance for England in 2020, but both former coach Gareth Southgate and current coach Thomas Tuchel have indicated that he is not currently in their selection plans. Although Greenwood is eligible to represent Jamaica under FIFA regulations, there has been no formal request processed by the Jamaican football authorities regarding a potential switch.
