New Publication Celebrates India's Historic First Olympic Gold Medal

In a significant event celebrating India's rich sporting history, a new book titled "India’s First Olympic Gold" was launched today in New Delhi. The book, authored by renowned hockey historian K. Arumugam, chronicles the remarkable journey of the Indian hockey team during the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, where they secured the nation's first Olympic gold medal. The launch was officiated by P.T. Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The narrative of the book delves into the challenges faced by the hockey team, including selection dilemmas, financial constraints, and internal conflicts within the hockey community at the time. It vividly recounts the team's triumphant match against the Netherlands on May 26, 1928, which not only marked a pivotal moment in sports but also helped forge a distinct identity for a colonized India, separate from British rule. Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India, was also present at the event and expressed hope that more initiatives like this would emerge to document and celebrate India's hockey history.
