India secures Pro League return by defeating New Zealand to clinch the FIH Women's Nations Cup.

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Indian women's hockey team triumphed over New Zealand with a 2-0 victory in the final of the FIH Women's Nations Cup, held on June 21, 2026. This victory not only secured India their second Nations Cup title but also guaranteed their promotion to the prestigious FIH Women's Pro League for the upcoming season.

India's journey to the final was marked by an unbeaten streak, having previously defeated the USA (3-2), Japan (2-1), and Uruguay (3-2) in the Pool A matches. The team showcased their dominance in the semi-finals with a commanding 6-0 win against Chile, setting the stage for their final showdown against the hosts.

Early Goals Set the Tone

The final match began with New Zealand controlling possession, but it was India who struck first. Navneet Kaur opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a powerful penalty corner conversion. Just eleven minutes later, Sunelita Toppo extended India's lead to 2-0, deftly deflecting a shot from Deepika during another penalty corner. This early advantage allowed India to adopt a disciplined defensive strategy, effectively stifling New Zealand's attempts to respond.

Despite New Zealand's efforts to regain control, including a few opportunities to score, India maintained their composure and held onto their lead through a strong defensive performance. The first half concluded with India firmly in command, and they continued to thwart New Zealand's advances in the third quarter, denying them any clear chances to score.

A Solid Defensive Performance

As the match progressed into the fourth quarter, New Zealand earned a penalty corner, but Indian goalkeeper Savita was equal to the task, making a crucial save. India's defense remained resolute, and they effectively countered New Zealand's pressure, ensuring that the scoreline remained unchanged. The final whistle confirmed India's victory, solidifying their status as champions of the Nations Cup.

In recognition of their achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for the support staff. Lalremsiami was honored as the 'Player of the Match,' while Deepika finished as the tournament's joint-top scorer, alongside the USA's Ashley Sessa, each netting six goals throughout the competition.
