Hockey Jharkhand has established itself as a dominant force in women's hockey, securing 34 medals over the past 16 years.

Hockey Jharkhand has solidified its reputation as a powerhouse in junior women's hockey by winning the 16th Hockey India sub-junior women’s National Championship, marking a remarkable third consecutive title. This victory, achieved on August 12, 2025, in Kakinada City, underscores the state's commitment to developing young talent in the sport.

Since 2014, Jharkhand has invested significantly in hockey infrastructure, notably through the construction of astroturf fields, which have been instrumental in fostering a new generation of players. The state’s structured youth development programs have yielded impressive results, particularly in women's hockey, where Jharkhand has amassed a total of 34 medals over the years, including 10 gold, 11 silver, and 13 bronze in various competitions.

Consistent Success in Women's Hockey

The junior women’s team has been particularly successful, securing 14 medals—five gold, five silver, and four bronze—while the sub-junior team has claimed 12 medals, including four golds, during this championship run. This recent achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and coaches involved in the program.

Simdega district has emerged as a key contributor to this success, often referred to as a nursery for Indian women’s hockey. The sub-junior national championship featured several standout players from Simdega, including Sandeepa Kumari, Pushpa Manjhi, and Preeti Biluung, all of whom have shown exceptional talent and potential. Over the past decade, from 2016 to 2026, Simdega has consistently produced athletes who have gone on to represent India at both junior and senior levels.

Broader Impact on Indian Hockey

Notable players from Jharkhand include current Indian captain Salima Tete and several others who have made significant contributions to the national team. The success of the women’s program has overshadowed the men’s side, which has also seen achievements, including four medals in the sub-junior men’s National Championships. This dual success highlights the comprehensive development of hockey in Jharkhand, positioning the state as a critical player in the future of Indian hockey.
