Formula 1 made a high-profile return to the Indian sporting landscape this week as the inaugural F1 Sim Racing India Open reached its conclusion at the NSCI Dome. The event, which served as a showcase for the country’s emerging digital racing talent, saw 10-year-old Mumbai resident Vihaan Joshi secure the Under-15 national championship title after a commanding performance throughout the finals.

Joshi, a student at the Podar ORT International School, demonstrated remarkable consistency and pace across the six-race final series. After establishing himself as the driver to beat during the qualifying stages, he maintained his momentum by winning five of the six races contested on the day. His final tally of 134 points comfortably secured him the top spot on the podium.

A Pathway to Real-World Motorsport

The Under-15 competition featured a field of 20 young drivers who navigated a diverse selection of circuits from the current Formula 1 calendar, including the Albert Park Circuit in Australia, the Bahrain International Circuit, and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Canada. The drivers also faced challenges at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and the Yas Marina Circuit.

The podium was rounded out by fellow Mumbai racer Agastya Ivan Crasto, who finished second with 108 points, while Pune’s Hridaan Sanadhya claimed third place with 76 points. This championship is a key component of the One in a Billion initiative, a project spearheaded by Mumbai Falcons Racing Limited (MFRL) in partnership with Formula 1. The initiative is designed to identify and nurture young Indian racing talent, with the ultimate goal of providing a structured pathway from virtual sim racing into real-world karting programmes.

Building India's Racing Future

The event at the NSCI Dome also serves as a precursor to the Open category finals, where senior drivers are competing for the opportunity to represent India at the upcoming Cup of Nations. Scheduled for 7 to 9 November, the international team championship will see the top two finishers from the Indian Open face off against elite sim racers from around the globe.

For MFRL, the India Open is a significant milestone in their long-term strategy to establish a sustainable talent pipeline for Indian motorsport. By leveraging data-driven development and professional training, the organization aims to cultivate the skills necessary to produce India’s next Formula 1 driver within the next decade. Following the conclusion of the junior and senior categories, the event stands as a testament to the growing intersection of digital competition and traditional motorsport development in the region.
